‘A source said: “He’s had the idea about how such a wayward soccer star would go down in the States and he knows he’ll have fun playing a character like this one.”
It is believed Russell will base his character on his boyhood hero Frank McAvennie, who played for the actor’s beloved West Ham Football Club in London and was known for his bad boy behaviour.
The source added to The Sun newspaper: “Russell loved watching McAvennie from the terraces as a kid but was also interested in his off-field behaviour.”
Russell’s womanising character in the movie will be sentenced to community service and ordered to coach the local high school soccer team.’ Shooting begins next year.
